Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can stop fast-moving baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are meticulously tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve blasting a two-by-four at the window to make sure glass keeps intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which travels 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We thought, if we could create a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a fix that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help outfit a historic building outside of Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We modified our hurricane cannon to test the home run-resistant windows. We fired baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the force of a home run.

Our tempered glass resisted the baseballs best because it’s tougher and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed of more than 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s situation, we found the baseballs would be going at about 60 mph upon hitting windows.

But we went above and beyond and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run being launched at your windows, there are many reasons to choose strong, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s good for homeowners who want an added level of protection from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are bringing up the next great baseball player.

Consider the strengths and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Durable glass similar to what is used in car windows.
  • Used where damages from broken glass are a concern.
  • Normally fragments into small, square pieces as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Rochester at 507-847-1060. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
